Living Soil Tube®

Stabilize, Protect, and Restore with Native Vegetation

The Living Soil Tube® is a soil encapsulation solution designed to stabilize soil and protect high-flow areas such as culverts, bridge structures, and exposed utility lines. This innovative system uses native vegetation to anchor and strengthen the soil over time, creating a resilient barrier. The tubes are made from durable, non-woven geotextiles and are easy to install without the need for heavy machinery.

  • Filled and Sealed for Strength: Living Soil Tube® can be filled using 5-gallon buckets of sand, filled ¾ of the tube’s length to provide optimal weight and stability (~250 lbs when filled).
  • Simple Sealing with Zip Ties: Sealing is made easy with a twist-and-tie process using zip ties.
  • Grommet Reinforcement: Equipped with grommets along the seam for secure anchoring and to maintain the tube’s integrity.
  • Layered with Native Vegetation: Native plants can be layered between courses of Living Soil Tube®, enhancing its resilience and promoting root growth through the geotextile material.
  • No Heavy Machinery*: Only two workers are needed to fill the tubes, position, and secure Living Soil Tube®.
  1. Preparation: Bring materials and tools near the work site.
  2. Filling: Fill the Living Soil Tube® with sand using 5-gallon buckets.
  3. Sealing: Twist the top of each tube until a knot forms and secure with zip ties to seal.
  4. Vegetation Layer: Before a course of Living Soil Tube® is built, native vegetation should be layered in between the courses. This promotes rooting into the geotextile fabric, strengthening the structure over time.
  5. Create a Base Course: Begin by placing Living Soil Tube® against the area you’re looking to stabilize. Tuck in the tongue (seam) to create a seamless, solid wall.
  6. Complete The Wall: Once your base course is laid, continue building up the Living Soil Tube® wall. Ensure you are placing native vegetation between each course. Once the wall is built and battered back, place a Living Log® (vegetated coconut log) on top to introduce additional desired plant species.
  • Weight (Filled): Approximately 250 lbs.
  • Material: Nonwoven Geotextile
  • Recommended Filling: Sand, filled to ¾ of the tube length using 5-gallon buckets
  • Sealing Method: Twist the top of the tube and secure with zip ties
  • Installation Requirement: 2 workers, NO heavy machinery
  • Dimensions (Unfilled): Length: 44 in, Width: 20 in
  • Grommet Details: Grommets are located 10 inches and 29 inches on center from the starting edge.
  • Maximum Load Capacity: If relevant, specify the maximum weight or load the tube can bear when fully installed.
  • Durability and UV Resistance: Mention if the geotextile material has any UV resistance or other durability features (e.g., puncture resistance).
  • Color Options (if any): State if the tubes come in different colors or finishes, which might be important for aesthetic or visibility reasons in certain projects.
